Alice Kitchel Installed as President BPW/VT
Alice Kitchel of Danville was installed as President of the Vermont Business and Professional Woman at the 93rd convention at Burke Mountain Resort on May 19, 2018. After a twenty-five-year career as an art therapist and mental health counselor, Alice established Puma Consulting and Coaching in 2012. Danielle, a Licensed Practical Nurse at Hagan, Rinehart & Connolly Pediatricians in Burlington, celebrated her two-year term as president at a reception. She has been a member of BPW since 2010 and serves as Chair of the Education and Human Development Committee on the Vermont Commission on Women.
Alice Kitchel led a World Café, a round table discussion among participants. She asked BPW members to reflect at the prior years of BPW and to imagine where the organization will be in the next several years. Shelley Maloney, Member at Large, from Connecticut led an ice breaker and Donna Rae Heath of Waterford spoke on the history of BPW. St. Johnsbury is the oldest BPW local in the state. It started with 25 members in 1922 and a few short years will celebrate its 100th anniversary.
Amy Robinson, Director of the NEKCA Micro Business Development Program and and Elisa Hastings, ASPIRE Program Manager spoke on the success of ASPIRE. Ten women owned businesses in the Northeast Kingdom received grants from ASPIRE to write business plans or purchase equipment, take a course or market their products, or renovate their space. The candidates had to write a business plan and present it to an audience that included three judges and the public at Catamount Arts. Because of the grants the women were able to expand their businesses and hire more employees in the Northeast Kingdom. They received consistent help from a Circle of Friends which included several St. Johnsbury BPW members.
Two women competed for the Young Careerist award. They were interviewed by a panel of judges. Each gave a four-minute speech. They were Shelby LaRock from Champlain Valley and Asia Rogue from Franklin County. Shelby, the winner, is employed in the New York State Assembly. Asia is a volunteer in the Humane Society and for tax programs. She recently became certified by the American Payroll Association. The judges for the competition were Member at Large Shelley Maloney from Connecticut; Paula Kitchel, St. Johnsbury BPW; and Pearl Gilbert, Member at Large from St. Albans.
Danielle Martel presented the 2018 awards: Berl Morrill to Jacqui Hood-Lefebvre, Franklin County; Alice Paul to Molly Ryan, Champlain Valley; Woman of the Year, Kathy Recchia, Champlain Valley; and Employer of the Year, Superior Technical Ceramics, Franklin County.
The locals that make up the Business and Professional Women are: Champlain Valley, New York; and in Vermont, Franklin County; St. Johnsbury; and Members at Large of which several attended from Pennsylvania, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island.
