Leslie Higgins - President of Burlington BPW Burlington BPW Report
January 7, 2010
It seems like we all just got together for the Fall Board Meeting in Colchester at the Hampton Inn, and the fall flew by as well as the holiday season!
We have held three board meetings, a business dinner meeting and a holiday party since the end of October. We meet at the Best Western Conference Center for the monthly dinner and business meetings and at Shaw’s on Route 7 in Burlington for our Board meetings. Shaw’s has a good size room; and we can buy goodies to eat if we are hungry!
On November 11 we held our EOY, WOY, and WOA Awards at our monthly business meeting. United Way of Chittenden County was our Employer of the Year! Laurie Hammond, owner of Triple Loop Skate and Dance, was our Woman of Achievement. And long-time BPW member, Barbara Swinton, was our Woman of the Year! All awardees were well-deserving of their awards.
On December 10, we held our December Holiday Party. We were to be entertained by the Champlain Voices, and Past State BPW President, Kim Bina was going to present the Berl Morrill awards (engraved) that were long overdue to the Burlington award winners for years 2007 and 2009. However, bad weather kept Champlain Voices, Kim Bina, and many members away. We still enjoyed a delicious dinner, swapped homemade cookies, and held a Yankee Swap. It was a lovely evening sharing the holiday spirit together.
Looking ahead our L.O. will be reviewing fundraising efforts and membership. Our fundraising committee will be offering some new and some old ideas. We most likely will not be holding a Spring Job Expo this year. We started a membership drive through letters to women who expressed interest during the fall of 2009. Ninety letters via email were sent out with only ten returns for bad email addresses. We are hoping to generate interest, and it is a reminder that Burlington BPW is looking for members! Our State BPW revamped their By-Laws, and we will be starting the process in our L.O. as soon as we receive the final State version. We have been discussing collecting membership dues collectively and annually once a year rather than on an individual basis throughout the year. So far we have not figured out how to transition from our current process to the annual. We are working on it.
Looking back, it was a year of losses and change. It was also a year of ongoing support, strength, and courage from members to members and to our community in the true spirit under which BPW was launched.
Most Respectfully,
Leslie Higgins
Burlington BPW President
